G20 Exudes Optimism on Global Economic Outlook
The G20 group of finance ministers is optimistic about achieving a "soft landing" for the global economy, according to a draft communique. The document, which may be subject to changes before the G20 finance ministers' meeting concludes on Thursday, emphasizes the group's commitment to combating protectionism. This meeting coincides with the annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
The draft communique acknowledges the existence of many challenges while expressing confidence in the global economic outlook. Finance officials pledged to maintain a fair and open multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO). They also support ongoing reform efforts to ensure the WTO remains a rule-based, nondiscriminatory, and transparent institution.
The G20 ministers stressed the importance of cooperation in promoting an inclusive, fair, sustainable, and transparent trade environment. This commitment comes at a time when the global economy faces numerous pressures, including geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions. The final communique is expected to be released after the ministers conclude their talks on Thursday.
