NBCUniversal Prepares to Spin Off Its Cable Television Division
Comcast, the American media giant, is preparing to spin off its NBCUniversal cable television division. According to reports, the plan, which will be announced today, involves the creation of a new company that will include channels such as MSNBC, CNBC, and USA. The new company will encompass channels like Syfy and Golf Channel, which are still profitable, having generated a total revenue of $7 billion in the year ending by the end of September.
Comcast will retain control of the NBC broadcast television network, film and television studios, theme parks, and the Peacock streaming service. Sources anticipate that the separation process will take about a year to complete, with the new entity being led by Mark Lazarus, the current president of NBCUniversal's media group.
Moreover, sources indicated that the separation of the cable networks would provide options for potential mergers with other networks or the possibility of being sold to private equity.
