Meta Continues Ban on New Political Ads After Elections

Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) announced that it has extended its ban on new political advertisements following the US elections, stating that this suspension will last until the end of this week. The company, which owns Facebook, detailed its decision in a blog post today.

This move by the social media giant is part of efforts to combat the spread of misinformation, which was a significant concern during the previous presidential election. As technology companies face increasing pressure regarding content moderation, Meta is taking steps to ensure stricter scrutiny during election periods.

Under the current restrictions, Meta will not allow the publication of new political advertisements on its platform. However, the company will permit the circulation of political ads that were already live and had received at least one impression prior to the ban taking effect. These ads will be subject to limited regulatory capabilities.

This policy reflects Meta's approach during past election periods. The company has expressed concerns about the limited time to counter new claims that may emerge in political advertising during the critical final days of a campaign.

Last year, Meta also restricted the use of new generation artificial intelligence advertising products by political campaigns and advertisers in other regulated sectors. This has reinforced the company's stance on the responsible dissemination of political content.
